lucky here in the united states, our friends in canada won't be so lucky. earl is about to make landfall as a very strong tropical storm in nova scotia. so the most damage that earl will sprou going to happen take up this from halifax down to nova scotia. 70-miles-per-hour winds, but the storm is moving quickly. so by later today, the storm will be long gone. so what's next? september is the peak of the hurricane season. usually one storm after another. it looks like we'll miss the storm once again. this is a slow moving system, should be near puerto rico about five days from now, so we have plenty of time to watch it and there's no threat to the united states as we go through the labor day weekend. back to you. >>> overseas, they're still as cessing the damage this morning after a major earthquake in new zealand. it measure 7.1 and was centered on the south island just west of christ church, the country's second largest city. melissa stokes of tvnz is in christ church for us. we know there was certain for people trapped in rubble. what do we know about any rescues or cualties at this ho

york trying to flee to canada. he's now awaiting extradition to fairfax county. nearly a dozen employees at an arlington nursing home have been indicted and two already stricted. in one of the largest nursing home abuse cases in virginia history. as peggy fox reports the most serious charge involved a nurse who's accused of holding a pillow over an elderly man's face. >> my husband's diaper, the time the diaper was changed and i come in 12 hours lair and the diaper was saturated and never changed. >> reporter: she said she complained constantly about the care her husband received during the last seven years of his life. >> the dentures were never removed from his mouth and cleaned. his fingernails and toenails were dirty and long. his hair never shampooed or shaved. >> jack evans with was partially paralyzed barely move and had trouble breathing. his widow said he would find his lunch uncovered and untouched in the evening. >> no one would feed him and he couldn't feed himself. it was dropped off there. sometimes there would be roaches on the tray. >> evans attorney says the me

to cape cod and the islands and perhaps maybe a direct landfall over atlantic canada, you guys, but i keep stressing a wonel to the left could mean the difference between a bad storm and a very dangerous storm. that could still make landfall somewhere along the east coast. water, still very warm, up until you get towards the east coast, and the water temperatures drop off and that's going to help weaken the storm, along with the trough that should kick the storm out to sea. but the timing of this trough is going to be essential, and there is some of the you have advisories that are out, which i just mentioned to you. so now, the latest right now from the national hurricane center, hurricane warnings in effect for parts of the mid atlantic region and, of course, watches extending all the way up now towards delaware. so this storm is getting stronger by the minute, and, of course, we are watching the track very carefully. i'll have all that updated information. i apologize, it really just came in before i came to air. so everything is fluid, jenna! jen no need to apologize. we know you're wo
